ORANGE : Detour to Be Set Up for River Bike Trail

Share

The Santa Ana River bike trail is taking a detour.

The trail, used by hundreds of cyclists a week, will be diverted through the city on Taft Avenue and Batavia Street while the county works on the river’s drainage course. The City Council agreed to prohibit parking on Taft between the river and Batavia Street until the work is completed, probably by November.

Public Works Director Harry W. Thomas said that the detour route is likely to be busy. More than 100 bicycles were logged on the trail during a one-hour period on a recent weekend, he said, and that number will grow as summer approaches.

To help cyclists cross the city’s streets safely, push-button signals are being installed at traffic-light intersections, Thomas said. The county will reimburse the city $10,000 for the work.
