In the early 20th Century, Stanton was a largely agricultural area known for its sweet potato, beet, barley and berry crops.

Until 1911, the town was known as Benedict. It incorporated that year to fight a proposal by neighboring Anaheim to build a sewage farm in the area. Residents selected the name Stanton in honor of Seal Beach developer Phillip Stanton, who helped them achieve cityhood.

When the sewage farm proposal died, Stanton residents unincorporated in 1924, only to create a new city in 1956. In the 1960s, most of the farmland along Beach Boulevard gave way to strip malls, motels and housing tracts.
