He’s far from Judge Lance A. Ito’s California courtroom, but he’s still in the spotlight.

Kato Kaelin was greeted by an estimated 5,000 fans Saturday at the Honey Creek Mall during his first celebrity appearance.

“All you can see is wall to wall faces,” said Staci Garzolini, who works in the mall’s information center. “It’s amazing, especially for this small of a town” of about 60,000 people.

Kaelin, who finished testifying in the O.J Simpson case last week, raised at least $2,000 for United Cerebral Palsy of the Wabash Valley, said Donna Bruner, whose store, Bottom Half, was a co-sponsor of the event.

The money came from fans who contributed $10 for an autograph, $15 for an autographed picture, and $12 for a T-shirt reading “America’s Favorite House Guest,” she said.

Bruner said Kaelin was the consummate crowd pleaser.

“They were cheering and chanting,” she said.

“These people here are genuine, good-hearted people that were so honestly honored that he was coming here,” she added. “They were just thrilled.”
