WEIMAR : Buchenwald Reunion

Share

Survivors of the Nazi concentration camp at Buchenwald gather Sunday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their liberation by American forces during the final weeks of World War II in Europe.

Several hundred inmates and former American soldiers who helped free the camp are expected to take part in the events that include a commemorative service at a theater in nearby Weimar.

An estimated 60,000 people died at Buchenwald between the time it opened in 1937 and its liberation in 1945. The victorious Allies placed the camp and its surrounding region in the Soviet zone of occupation after the war, and Moscow subsequently imprisoned thousands of Germans there. Historians believe about 7,000 died there during the Soviet era.
