LOS ANGELES COUNTY : State Criticized for Not Paying for Simpson Trial
Supervisor Mike Antonovich criticized the state Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday for failing to support a bill to reimburse Los Angeles County for the cost of the O.J. Simpson double-murder trial.
“Legislators have put the best interest of the county last,” he said. “Because this case is being tried under state laws, which we have no control over in the county, the state should bear its tremendous cost.”
On Feb. 14, the Board of Supervisors voted to ask state lawmakers to consider legislation to require the state to help the county pay for the Simpson trial and other high-profile cases. As of Feb. 28, the Simpson case has cost the county $3.2 million.
Sen. Richard Mountjoy (R-Arcadia) sponsored the bill. It was heard by the Senate Judiciary Committee, but was held in committee.
