The City Council is sending a resolution to President Bill Clinton and all members of Congress from California urging that the Long Beach Naval Shipyard be kept open.

By unanimous vote Tuesday night, the council approved a measure that asks Clinton and Congress to overturn the closure recommendation made by a special federal commission.

The council’s resolution says that “970 private sector businesses will be affected by the closure of the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.” The resolution also says that the shipyard’s demise would “result in $757 million annually in regional economic losses.”

Mayor Wally D. Linn, in a memo to the council, said: “The state has suffered significant job losses because of federally mandated base closures.”
