GM Workers Approve Contract: General Motors Corp. workers overwhelmingly approved a new contract to end a 6-day-old strike at GM’s light-truck plant in Pontiac, Mich. A spokeswoman for United Auto Workers union Local 594 said the agreement, which was reached Wednesday, was approved by workers by a 99.1% margin. The strike cost GM about 5,100 trucks, a company spokeswoman said. The agreement calls for GM to add several hundred jobs at the Pontiac East plant, drawing from a pool of about 1,700 employees idled when GM closed its Pontiac West truck plant in December. The UAW wanted to find jobs for those workers locally, while GM wanted to transfer them to plants elsewhere.
