The hills north of Brea and La Habra were among the state’s most productive oil-producing centers early this century.

An oil boom lured hundreds of workers to the area, sparking growth in nearby cities.

But disaster struck on April 8, 1926, when lightning struck the Stewart Tank Farm, which stored hundreds of gallons of crude oil at Brea.

The lightening triggered an explosion that shattered windows for miles around. The tank farm burned for three days and brought national attention to the city, according to the book “A Hundred Years of Yesterdays.”
