WESTMINSTER : Home Aid for Elderly Is a Can-Do Project
An 85-year-old mobile home park resident recently was the beneficiary of the city’s new volunteer program to help clean and beautify neighborhoods.
Twenty-four city volunteers, including members of the City Council, repainted Nell Kepner’s mobile home, cleaned up her yard and flower garden, and performed minor repairs.
The paint and supplies were donated by local merchants.
It was one of the first projects of Operation C.A.N. D.O. (City And Neighborhood Direct Outreach), which began as a disaster relief effort during the recent rainstorms and has now become a volunteer program to help improve neighborhoods.
Elderly or disabled residents who cannot take care of their homes will be assisted through the program, said Councilman Tony Lam, who has spearheaded the effort.
“There is so much we can do to help each other in the community,” Lam said. “If we ask people to help their neighbors, they will accept the challenge.”
Other volunteers included Councilwoman Charmayne S. Bohman, City Manager Bill Smith, Finance Director Brian Mayhew and Public Works Director Don Vestal.
