Embroiled in a bitter dispute over the hanging of a Philippine maid convicted of murder, Singapore on Tuesday agreed to a Philippine government request that it withdraw its ambassador from Manila.

The two countries also agreed that their foreign ministers would work out arrangements for medical experts from both countries to re-examine the remains of Delia Maga, a Philippine maid who was murdered in Singapore in 1991.

Last month’s execution of Flor Contemplacion, convicted of a double murder, provoked intense Philippine anger and created a diplomatic rift between Singapore and the Philippines.

Contemplacion, 42, was convicted of killing Maga and a Singaporean toddler in 1991. But many Filipinos believe the mother of four was framed and tortured into confessing.
