Mexico Raises Tortilla Prices: Tacos, tostadas and enchiladas could become more expensive in Mexico after the government raised tortilla prices for the first time in four years. Whether rolled or folded, fried or bathed in hot sauce, the thin cornmeal pancake is an essential ingredient in many Mexican foods. Tortilla prices are set and subsidized by the government. A kilogram of tortillas will cost 15 cents in Mexico City, up from 12 cents, according to the official government gazette. The increase is aimed at easing the burden price limits place on the tortilla industry, which employs about 150,000 Mexicans, the gazette said. The government pledged to expand a subsidy program that allows 2 million poor Mexican families to get a free kilogram of tortillas each day.
