Election: Card Club Proposal Before Voters Card clubs in Pomona?

I am against card clubs. However, drive through Pomona and try to avoid being depressed. It seems like half of the buildings are unoccupied. To think of a card club as bad news compared with the other things that have occurred in this town is impossible.

PHIL WESSELS Pomona Are you aware of the campaign that is being waged in the city of Pomona by the potential owners of the card club called Champs? As this issue is being decided by ballot on April 18, a very intense lobbying campaign is under way to reach community activists and sway their opinion to vote for the measure.

We are being subjected to public meetings, local garden meetings, a poster campaign and many follow-up telephone calls. The potential owner, Leon Chu, has made a fortune in the ladies garment industry and seems determined to make another in Pomona.

My fear is that a campaign of this magnitude will buy the result.
