Nine-year-old Jennifer Fein may not understand the nuances of federal accounting, but a promotional poster she created for the Treasury Department has earned the Simi Valley girl a $500 U. S. savings bond.

Jennifer placed second in a statewide contest for creating a poster that promotes savings bonds. The competition, sponsored by the Department of Treasury, was open to elementary school students. The two other top finishers were from Sherman Oaks and San Diego.

On Wednesday, Jennifer joined the first- and third-place winners for a ceremony at the governor’s office in Los Angeles.

Jennifer’s colorful drawing was selected from 800 entries as one of the top three posters from California.

“It’s gorgeous,” said her father, Steve Fein. “It’s an 11-by-17-(inch) tabloid size that says, ‘Buy U.S. savings bonds, invest in your future.’ ”

Each letter depicts different scenes, symbols or personalities from U. S. history, scrawled in vibrant colors. George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, the White House, the Declaration of Independence and the space shuttle are among the national symbols that adorn the poster.

“I thought that I should draw the U. S. throughout history,” Jennifer said. “I couldn’t think of anything better. . . . My teacher let me borrow her encyclopedias to copy the White House, and the rest I did on my own.”

Jennifer’s poster will hang in the Township school library until the end of the year.
