Attorney in Colosio Case Killed in Crash
The lawyer for the accused second gunman in the assassination of Mexican presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio died in a car accident near Tijuana on Wednesday.
Police said there were no signs of foul play. But the death of Aron Juarez Jimenez, a prominent Tijuana attorney and former top federal prosecutor, was another strange twist in the assassination case, raising new suspicions of a cover-up.
Juarez was the attorney for Othon Cortez Vasquez, a ruling party aide arrested in February after authorities declared that Colosio had been the victim of a plot involving two gunmen. In addition, Juarez was present in March, 1994, at the campaign rally where Colosio was shot and was among the onlookers who found a bullet at the crime scene--a bullet investigators say was planted as part of a cover-up.
Juarez was killed early Wednesday morning when his car careened off the mountain highway between Mexicali and Tijuana. Federal highway police said the crash did not involve other vehicles and appeared to be an accident.
