Participants Sought for Free Job Training

Share

The Job Training Policy Council of Ventura County is looking for 131 economically disadvantaged people to enroll in a free occupational training program.

Participants will learn skills needed in such industries as computers, maintenance, truck driving, bookkeeping, medical assistance and service-oriented fields. JTPC recently received $1.4 million in state funding to help residents re-enter the job market and will use the money to pay for schooling or technical training for participants.

“What we’re finding is that employees want people with specific skills like computers or bookkeeping,” said Maria Elena Benavides, program supervisor.

“We are providing the trainees with specific skills to make them job-ready.”

JTPC will also help participants with housing, transportation and child-care needs while they are in the training programs.

To qualify, a person must be receiving public assistance, have been out of work for 15 of the past 26 weeks or be otherwise economically disadvantaged.

Benavides said participants will be placed in jobs paying $6.50 to $11 an hour.
