Board to Discuss Teachers’ Contract

The Glendale Board of Education will hold a special meeting Monday morning to discuss upcoming contract negotiations with the district’s teachers, who are asking for an across-the-board pay hike.

The Glendale Teachers Assn. submitted its contract proposals to the district last week, asking that a 1.5% raise instituted last year be upheld for all teachers, and that additional raises be granted to bring the district’s pay scale up to par with other school districts.

Currently, the district’s entry-level salary for teachers without a master’s degree is about $28,000 per year. At the top end of the pay scale, a teacher with a master’s degree can earn a maximum of about $55,000. The teachers have contended such wages fall below those in other districts of comparable size.

The teachers’ current three-year employment contract expires June 30. The district is expected to answer the teachers’ demands with their own proposal within the next few weeks, officials said.

At Monday’s meeting, the board will discuss the contract in closed session with Robert Read, Assistant Supt. of Human Resources, who is the district’s representative in the talks.
