Two separate groups of east Ventura County teen-agers went on late-night vandalism sprees, smashing eight mailboxes and shattering 19 car windows in Newbury Park, Ventura County sheriff’s deputies said Saturday.

Three Thousand Oaks youths were cited for destroying the mailboxes with either a club or a bat about 11 p.m. Friday night, Sgt. Adel Moussa said. The teen-agers were released to their parents.

Three youths from Simi Valley shot out car windows in the same neighborhood with a BB gun, also around 11 p.m., Moussa said. One has been caught, cited and released. Police were searching for the other two.

“We’re still in the process of rounding them up now,” Moussa said. “We know who they are, it’s just a matter of finding them.”

The names of the youths were not released because they are minors.

Vandalism is a misdemeanor offense. “They could get probation, (pay) restitution or both,” Moussa said.

Although the incidents were not related, Moussa said, they were triggered by a common condition: “boredom and nothing to do on a Friday night.”
