Today is the deadline for filing federal income tax returns and extension requests.

Taxpayers received two extra days this year because the traditional deadline, April 15, fell on a Saturday. Nevertheless, millions of procrastinators are expected to crowd post offices to make sure their returns are postmarked before midnight.

The U.S. Postal Service has arranged festivities for people making the trek to post offices to beat or meet the deadline.

For $1, taxpayers in Santa Rosa, Calif., can throw a pie in the face of an IRS agent. Proceeds benefit the family of a slain deputy sheriff who was recently killed. Several tax agents have volunteered to take turns in the event, local postal officials say.

In Oakland, taxpayers don’t even have to go to the post office: Returns will be collected by postal workers at 10 Bay Area Rapid Transit subway stations.

Even better, West Sacramento taxpayers will be offered samples of the “Presidential Chili” enjoyed by President Clinton on his recent visit to California.

The Ringling Brothers Circus is providing elephants and clowns to encourage New Yorkers to mail early in the day, and there will be giveaways of headache remedies, antacids and food.
