74 Unisys Workers to Switch Companies, Not Locations

As of today, Unisys Corp. has two businesses with 150 employees in adjacent buildings in Camarillo. But by the end of this month, 74 of those workers will likely be performing the same jobs for a new employer, defense giant Loral Corp.

That’s because of the March 22 announcement by Unisys, the world’s third-largest computer company, that it will sell its defense-related divisions to Loral, a New York-based defense contractor whose primary business is shipboard defense and air traffic control systems.

Joe Barrett, a Unisys spokesman at its Blue Bell, Pa., headquarters, said 74 of the 150 Camarillo employees will become part of Loral as part of a $862-million sale of Unisys Corp.’s aerospace and defense holdings.

The Camarillo employees to be transferred to the Loral payroll will remain in the same building long occupied by the Unisys government services division, which had been working on such defense projects as a mobile radar air defense system for the Turkish government.

The remaining Camarillo employees, in a different building, will keep working for Unisys as part of the health information services division management group.

A Loral spokesman said there are no plans to curtail or move the Camarillo facilities. Unisys’ combined Camarillo operation was particularly hard hit by defense cutbacks as it pared down its work force from a peak of 900 in 1992.
