Foster Nomination

Share

* We strongly object to the tone of many of the letters on these pages critical of the nomination of Dr. Henry W. Foster for surgeon general. These armchair pundits self-righteously pass judgment on a physician who chose to care for poor women, treating them with respect and dignity, and who has developed highly effective sexual responsibility education programs.

Dr. Foster is a highly qualified nominee who has shown true leadership on the issue of teen pregnancy, one of the most troubling issues currently confronting our nation. The former dean and acting president of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Foster founded the “I Have a Future” program, providing comprehensive health services while also encouraging youth to delay sexual activity and develop job skills. The hope he has provided to young people in Tennessee has received nationwide acclamation, including recognition as one of America’s “1,000 Points of Light” in 1991 by former President George Bush.

As a doctor, Dr. Foster has performed abortions--a legal, constitutionally protected procedure--when he and his patients deemed it to be medically necessary or appropriate. Americans respect and carefully guard the doctor-patient relationship, and Dr. Foster has fulfilled his moral obligation to his patients by informing them of the full range of options, and providing the best care he personally could. What American would not wish for the same?
