One of three taxicab companies that operate in the city was given permission to increase fares, but senior citizens, disabled people and students will get a 10% discount.

The City Council on Monday approved the rate increase requested by Coast Yellow Cab Cooperative.

Councilman Dave Garofalo said that while the cab company volunteered the rate discounts, he wanted the council to formally require them.

“Our role as elected officials is to be sensitive to this,” said Garofalo, who had urged his colleagues at a previous meeting to require the cab company to give the discounted fares.

Officials said the two other firms that operate in the city will offer the same discounted rates.

The new rates for the Coast Yellow Cab Cooperative will be $3.40 for the first mile, a 10-cent increase; and $1.80 for each additional mile, a 20-cent increase.

Rates also increased for waiting time and traffic delay from $20 to $22 an hour.

A memo to the City Council from the Police Department said the new rates for the Coast Yellow Cab Cooperative still are the lowest fares for the first mile. Other cab companies charge $3.50 to $4.20 for the first mile.
