TERROR IN OKLAHOMA CITY : TRADE CENTER COMPARISON
On Feb. 26, 1993, six people died and 1,000 were injured in a bombing at the World Trade Center in New York. A rented van blew up in a parking garage beneath one of the center’s twin towers. Four men have been convicted in the blast. The Oklahoma City bomb was of a similar size, perhaps 1,000 to 1,200 pounds, according to federal officials. Oklahoma City Mayor Ron Norick said the car bomb left a crater eight feet deep. It’s not clear what happened to the wreckage of the vehicle.
THE INVESTIGATIVE TEAM
Among the law enforcement personnel and resources assigned to investigate the Oklahoma City bombing:
* An FBI command post established in Oklahoma City will be in 24-hour contact with FBI headquarters command post in Washington and with the Department of Justice.
* Four DBI special agents in charge have been dispatched to the scene.
* The FBI has sent four evidence response teams and four bomb teams to Oklahoma City.
* Five top FBI agents with experience in similar investigations have been dispatched to Oklahoma City, along with bomb technicians from Boston, Chicago, Miami, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
* Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has sent national response teams and a mobile command center.
* The Oklahoma National Guard has been deployed to assist in controlling the area and evacuating the injured.
