Randell’s Jazz Club to Close

Share

Randell’s jazz club and restaurant will close after a performance tonight by saxophonist Brandon Fields because of an ongoing dispute between club owner Randell Young and the owners of the building, Young said Friday.

In a prepared statement, Young charged that the landlords have not fixed a number of problems in the building, such as a leaky ceiling, as part of “an extended campaign of harassment.”

A spokesman for New York-based Cushman & Wakefield, which manages the property for the Tokyo-based Orix Corp., declined comment Friday.

Young filed a lawsuit in 1993 charging the building’s original manager, Santa Monica-based Nansay USA, with harassing the club’s African American customers. Maintaining that the situation continued after Orix hired Cushman & Wakefield to manage the property, Young last year asked the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate his allegations that the building owners were violating civil rights laws. No decisions have been reached in either case.

“The reality is it’s just no fun to operate a business under these conditions,” Young said in his statement.

He said he will soon vacate the building, where he has operated for three years, but did not say when or where he might try to reopen.
