TERROR IN OKLAHOMA CITY : Oklahoma City Weather

After Saturday’s heavy rains and high winds delayed the search for victims, weather was expected to improve today, with scattered showers and slightly warmer temperatures--highs in the mid-50s. Extended forecast for the area calls for clearing late today and early Monday, followed by a warming trend, with highs nearing 80 by Thursday. Next chance of rain is thunderstorms starting Thursday afternoon.

Impromptu Relief Center

The Oklahoma Restaurant Assn. was beginning the second day of its annual convention when the bomb went off just four blocks away. “We felt a big jolt, and word spread across the exhibit floor pretty quickly,” said Debra Bailey, convention director. “We immediately canceled the remainder of the convention and transformed ourselves into a massive disaster relief center. We were in a perfect position to help.” Restaurateurs and exhibitors provided food and drink--intended as convention samples--for relief workers, families of the victims, firefighters, even blood donors. More than 20,000 meals were served the first day. Coffee exhibitors stayed up all night, brewing gallon after gallon for exhausted rescue squads. Meat companies with nearby warehouses jumped in, donating over 7,000 pounds of products, and a third of the convention floor was turned into a rest area, with 200 cots for exhausted relief workers. The effort was continuing through the weekend.
