A summary of selected City Hall actions last week that affect the Westside.

CITY COUNCIL

* CURB RAMPS--Approved the use of $55,000 to pay for the construction of 60 curb ramps in the Venice area. Curb ramps are designed to make it easier for baby strollers and wheelchairs to cross streets.

* ACCIDENT SETTLEMENT--Instructed the city attorney to pay a $390,000 settlement to a man who suffered injuries in a 1992 traffic accident when his car was struck by a Los Angeles Police Department vehicle that ran a red light. Ramesh Mansukhani, 47, was driving along Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica on June 29, 1992, when his car was hit by an unmarked police car heading north on Main Street. The driver of the police car said he had his flashing lights and siren on, but that was disputed by a witness. Mansukhani, whose 1982 Honda Civic was destroyed in the crash, suffered a concussion and injuries to his shoulder and knee that required surgery.

HOW THEY VOTED

* REGISTERED BULLETS--Instructed the city attorney to prepare an ordinance that would require firearms sellers to keep a record of the individuals who buy ammunition from them. Under the law, similar to one recently adopted in Pasadena, customers would have to provide valid identification when purchasing ammunition, and the gun store would have to keep records of the purchases and forward the information to the police. The proposal was opposed by Councilman Rudy Svorinich Jr., who said that “local controls on issues like this don’t work.” But Councilman Richard Alarcon said, “If one person might not be killing somebody because of this ordinance, then you should vote for it.” And Councilman Marvin Braude said, “It’s a small step, but we must not be fearful of taking a small step to solve an important problem.” Passed 9-2. Voting yes: Braude, John Ferraro, Jackie Goldberg, Nate Holden, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Absent: Ruth Galanter.
