LOS ANGELES : Council Opposes Granting MTA Police Higher Status

Share

The Los Angeles City Council decided Tuesday to oppose legislation that would grant full peace officer status to Metropolitan Transportation Authority police.

Deputy Police Chief John White said the agency opposes AB 1478 because it would heighten the fragmentation of law enforcement services on the city’s streets.

MTA police are responsible for protecting employees and passengers aboard buses and trains and at transit stations and yards.

MTA Police Chief Sharon Papa said her officers support the bill mainly because it will give them the full benefits given colleagues in the Los Angeles Police Department and other municipal law enforcement agencies.
