A New York man was awaiting extradition Tuesday after being arrested by police here on suspicion of murdering a man earlier this year outside a Staten Island bar.

A murder warrant was issued for Vincent Ferro, 29, in connection with the Jan. 24 slaying of an acquaintance, Keith Merolle, 25, at the Upper Deck Bar, according to Lt. Thomas Burke of the New York Police Department.

Ferro also served time in prison for an attempted murder and, in 1989, was almost killed when a pipe bomb exploded in his car, authorities in Brea and New York said Tuesday.

Members of the Brea Police Department Investigation Division and Special Enforcement Division arrested Ferro without incident Monday at his parents’ home in Yorba Linda, according to Detective Jerry Brakebill. He is being held at the Orange County Jail until an extradition hearing can be scheduled.

New York police informed Brea police, who patrol Yorba Linda, of Ferro’s possible whereabouts.

In 1989, Ferro was critically injured when an apparent pipe bomb exploded in his car, police said. Ferro also served several years in prison for attempted murder in connection with a shooting in Brooklyn, Burke said.
