ONCE WAS ENOUGH?: Ventura Mayor Tom Buford led a group rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” on kazoos Saturday when more than 30 Ventura and Oxnard officials visited two minor league baseball stadiums. . . . But Councilwoman Rosa Lee Measures was on her own when she started to reprise the tune at the council meeting Monday. “I actually would have been happy to join in,” Buford said, but “she was the only one with a kazoo. Kazoos sound better in groups.” The stadium issue remains before the council.

MAYDAY! MAYDAY!: Remote-control aviators all over Ventura County obsess themselves with the joys of piloting radio-guided model airplanes (B1). . . . When you control a $400 airplane with a $3.95 battery, you risk seeing your beloved craft buzz off into the haze, out of control. “Sometimes--not very often--they’ll just keep going and won’t respond to the commands you’re giving,” said longtime model pilot Hugh O’Connell of Oxnard. “In those cases there’s not much you can do except hope they crash softly. It’s kind of a sickening feeling.”

STILL SEARCHING: The family of Philip Taylor Kramer, the Iron Butterfly bassist-turned-entrepreneur who vanished during a trip to Los Angeles International Airport, will ask tonight for permission to stage a benefit concert at the Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks. . . . Kramer family members also had been scheduled to appear on “Donahue” today, but the airing was postponed until next week. . . . “I’m trying everything to keep my brother in people’s minds,” Kathy Kramer-Petersson said.

BUSMAN’S HOLIDAY: Danny Chow has never been to Oklahoma. But Chow, who moved to Simi Valley more than 12 years ago, decided to donate the day’s profits from his restaurant to explosion victims (B4). . . . Burger King manager Rudy Avila hasn’t been to the Sooner State either, but he eats at Chow’s restaurant often. So when he saw a need, he filled it--as a volunteer host. “I’m not going to work today, so I thought I’d help out,” Avila said.
