OXNARD : Girl Killed When TV Falls on Top of Her

A 5-year-old Oxnard girl died in a freak accident when a television set toppled from its stand onto her as she was reaching toward it, crushing her skull, authorities said.
Brittany Llorin was watching television in her parents’ Oxnard home on Monday when the television set, propped on a flimsy stand, fell on top of her, authorities said.
She was apparently trying to reach the top of the stand at the time, possibly to grab the remote control or manually change the channel, said Chief Deputy Coroner Jim Wingate. Her parents, Ricardo and Nilda Llorin, were home at the time but did not see the accident, he said.
Brittany was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon, Wingate said. The cause of death was several fractures to the skull, he said.
“Basically, the TV was on a shaky stand, placed on top of a thick carpet,” Wingate said. “Apparently, the (girl) was trying to reach the top of the stand when the TV fell on top of her.”
Coroners’ investigators reviewed the scene and decided that it was an accident. Oxnard police did not investigate.
