Life Vests Required on Small Boats

Share

Starting this week, recreational boaters with crafts less than 16 feet long must carry life vests to be in compliance with federal regulations, the Coast Guard announced.

Previously, federal regulations allowed boaters to carry flotation devices, such as cushions, that could be thrown to swimmers in trouble.

All recreational boats less than 16 feet, including canoes and kayaks of any length, are subject to the new rule that took effect Monday, according to the Coast Guard. The rule applies to any body of water.

A grace period will run to June 30 of this year, during which warning notices will be given. Fines for noncompliance can reach $1,000.
