Palestinian Court Issues Gaza’s First Death Sentence

GAZA CITY —
A Palestinian court Tuesday sentenced a policeman to death by firing squad after convicting him of killing a fellow policeman. It was the first death sentence handed out by a court in the self-rule area since autonomy began a year ago.
Maj. Ibrahim Hajhoud, who headed a three-member panel of police officers, passed the sentence on Sgt. Taher Fares, 28. Fares has two weeks to appeal the sentence to a higher court.
