Savoy CEO Recuperating After Angioplasty Surgery : Executives: Movie distribution company says it grappled with whether to disclose the news earlier.

Savoy Pictures Entertainment Chief Executive Victor A. Kaufman is recuperating at home in New York following angioplasty surgery, the movie distributor has confirmed.

Savoy President Lewis J. Korman said Friday that Kaufman, 52, underwent the procedure May 6 after he had chest pains. He was hospitalized until last Tuesday.

In angioplasty surgery, a balloon-like device is threaded through clogged arteries to clear them.

Korman said Kaufman is recovering well and has been working from home. He is expected to resume his full schedule soon.

New York-based Savoy, a publicly held company, debated whether to issue a statement regarding Kaufman’s health, Korman said, but concluded that angioplasty is fairly common and that a statement earlier might have needlessly raised suspicions about Kaufman’s health.

How much public companies should make known about the health of CEOs has been the subject of debate, with companies struggling to balance privacy concerns with the rights of shareholders to know relevant information.

In one of the highest-profile cases, Walt Disney Co. last year issued a statement immediately after Chairman Michael D. Eisner underwent quadruple bypass surgery.

By contrast, some investors and executives have criticized Time Warner Inc. for issuing what they believe were overly optimistic statements about the health of late Chairman Steven J. Ross, who died in 1992 of cancer.

Savoy is an independent movie and TV company whose films include “Serial Mom” and “Circle of Friends.” It recently made headlines by making a $20-million deal with actor Sylvester Stallone.
