Farm Subsidies

Share

* In response to “Betting the Farm on Life Sans Subsidies,” by Blake Hurst, Column Right, May 9:

Yes, I admit it. I am one of those bleeding-heart liberals. I have never been on welfare, or received any type of direct government aid. I have nothing against those who have. I do have a problem with those who do and complain. Hurst’s farm receives $10,000 a year of federal farm subsidies and he thinks it’s about time the government got off his back. Mr. Hurst, why not send the money back? Why not grow more beans? Why not reduce your production cost?

If you lived in the inner city, people on the right would say that you are lazy, irresponsible, and by introducing your nephew to this way of life, continuing the cycle of welfare. You say you do not even need the money, yet the solution you propose is five more years of living on the dole. You are willing to bet that being part of a freer world agricultural market pays better than farming for Uncle Sam. I say put your farm where your politics are.
