Lawmakers Agree to Cadet Program at Women’s College
State lawmakers agreed Friday to a program at a women’s college that would parallel the academics at The Citadel, giving the all-male military school a victory in its battle to bar women.
The program, to be called the South Carolina Women’s Leadership Institute, has to be sanctioned by a federal court to ensure it meets constitutional requirements.
But officials at The Citadel were jubilant, anticipating an end to their two-year legal battle with Shannon Faulkner, who sued to be admitted to the school and join its prestigious Corps of Cadets.
