SOUTH-CENTRAL : Infant-Health Group Gets Project Grant
An international health organization has received a $25,000 grant to improve prenatal and postnatal health care for local mothers and infants.
The donation from the Weingart Foundation will help fund the second year of the International Medical Corps’ program to pair volunteer mentors and low-income mothers for one-on-one support and counseling.
The effort is the first U.S.-based program for the corps, which provides emergency medical relief and health care training in Rwanda, Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Afghanistan, Angola and the Sudan.
The organization is one of several social service agencies that receives funds from the Weingart Foundation private philanthropy.
The IMC’s South-Central Los Angeles Project hopes to reduce the mortality rate among African American babies and help low-income families achieve self-sufficiency by providing health care and assisting with educational and employment opportunities.
Under the program, community volunteers provide one-on-one support to young mothers during and after pregnancy. Mothers also learn to identify their needs and use health care and social services to meet them.
