FOR FRIENDSHIP: Friends of the late Chester David Tollakson trekked to the top of Mt. Everest last week and sprinkled his ashes on the snowy peak. It was a fitting farewell for the Studio City man who died last year during a training climb. “[Tollakson] taught me that if you’ve got the courage, you go for it, so I went for it,” said Steve Reneker. WOOD WORK: “Bride of the Monster,” the Edward D. Wood Jr. film starring Bela Lugosi and a rubber octopus, premiered 40 years ago this month. Notorious for his low-budget movies, Wood saved a bundle by stealing the octopus from Republic Pictures in Studio City. “It was up on the ceiling for years and we lost one leg as we took it down,” he recalled in “Nightmare of Ecstasy,” a biography by Rudolph Grey.

WORLD SERIES CONTENDERS: The Cal State Fullerton women’s softball team defeated Cal State Northridge, 1-0, in a regional playoff game Saturday. . . . Later in the day, the seventh-ranked Matadors defeated Illinois State, 11-4, and will face Fullerton again today at 12:30 p.m. in the final. But Northridge (43-16) must beat the third-ranked Titans (44-15) twice to advance to its third consecutive Women’s College World Series appearance.
