Summer Splash : CRITIC’S PICKS

Share

OK, it’s summer, I’m excited. This is the season for outdoor theater, and performances of the Euripides tragedy “The Trojan Women” will take place at the lagoon at the CBS Studio Center (May 31). This is the same lagoon, by the way, in which the castaways on “Gilligan’s Island” dipped their feet.

When director Michael Arabian last directed a site-specific work at the CBS Studio Center, he had Romeo drive a sports car to Juliet’s window. Whether Mariette Hartley will make a similarly dramatic entrance as Andromache, we will have to wait and see.

San Diego will see another classic play with a TV angle, when John Goodman (a.k.a. Mr. “Roseanne”) takes on the role of Falstaff in “Henry IV” at the Old Globe (July 1).

And for a modern classic, Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America” returns to the Doolittle, giving Los Angeles a chance to see a refurbished Part II, “Perestroika,” rewritten for its Broadway opening. Most of “Perestroika” takes place in the winter or in heaven. Either setting should be refreshing when the play arrives on Aug. 12.
