Pianist Asaf Blasberg, 18, of Brea, and trumpeter David Taylor, 17, of Irvine, won first place (and $800 apiece) in their respective divisions in the 1995 B. Douglas Sawtelle Music Scholarship competition sponsored by the Orange County Musicians Assn. Local No. 7 of the American Federation of Musicians.

For the first time, the competition was divided into two major divisions--Piano Performance and General Instrument Performance--as well as Jazz/Commercial and special awards.

Pianist Sarkis Baltaian, 18, of Newport Beach won the $500 second-place piano award. Susan Landau, 17, Irvine, and Alice Aroutiunian, 17, Brea, tied for third-place piano award, and each won $150. Angela An-Chi Chang, 16, Brea, received honorable mention.

Clarinetist Eloise Taylor, 21, of Fullerton won the $500 second-place general-instrument award. Double bassist Jack French, 18, Mission Viejo, won $150. Trombonist Matthew Walker, 18, San Juan Capistrano, received honorable mention.

Saxophonist Jeff Nichols, 21, of Placentia won $200 in the Jazz/Commercial music category. Pianist Brian Pearl, 17, of Irvine won the $500 Mick Price Memorial award for jazz.

The winners will give a free recital June 5 at 7:30 p.m. at the Musicians Assn. Local 7 offices, 2050 S. Main St., Santa Ana. Funds for the competition are raised through an annual musicians’ “bash.” The 25th annual fund-raiser is planned for Nov. 26 at the Red Lion Hotel in Costa Mesa. (714) 546-8166.

Baritone Kristopher Kelly, a senior at Santa Margarita High School, and soprano Julie An, a junior at Irvine High School, each won $600 first-prize awards in Opera Pacific’s fifth High School Vocal Competition on Saturday at Pacific Piano in Santa Ana. Baritone Grant Arnow, a senior at Santa Margarita High, and soprano Meshell Dillon, a junior at the Orange County High School of the Arts, each won $300 second-place prizes. Soprano Kindra Spon, a junior at the High School of the Arts, won the $150 third-place prize.
