THE NAME GAME: If the Ventura County Cultural Heritage Board has its way, Simi Valley’s Corriganville Park will be designated a historical landmark, rather than a point of interest. . . . What’s the difference? Maybe money. The new designation may allow the park to qualify more easily for grants, Simi Valley officials say. . . . Improvements sought for the 225-acre park, which is often used as a filming site, include a visitors center and picnic areas.

ONE UP, ONE DOWN: Hit by plummeting ratings and a lack of youthful viewers, CBS has announced a fall television schedule that features 11 new series and only 10 renewals (F1). . . . Among the pilot winners is Peter Scolari of Ojai, who will play a computer zillionaire-type in the show “Dweebs.” . . . Another Ojai resident is among the losers. The Scott Bakula pilot “Prowler,” which revolved around a homicide detective, wasn’t picked up.

NO JOKE: Owners of local comedy clubs, which used to do standing-room-only business in the ‘80s, aren’t finding much to laugh about these days (Ventura Life, Page 8). . . . Observers say the clubs’ problems might be caused by the glut of comedy options on TV or by the fact that after the economic downturn of the early ‘90s, there are fewer entertainment dollars available. . . . “You’re just kind of fighting for your life out there,” says comic J. D. Frazier of Santa Paula.

ROLE MODEL: Moorpark senior Mindy Penrod is a star pitcher for her team and is expected to start today when the Musketeers play Cerritos Valley Christian in the Southern Section Division V quarterfinal (C8). . . . As an umpire for the Moorpark Girls’ Softball Assn., she has also been an inspiration to young players. “For those girls to have a chance to look up to a high school player like Mindy is incredible for them,” said Ken Bentley, Moorpark junior varsity coach.
