A dinner and candlelight vigil will be held to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Tian An Men Square massacre in Beijing.

The dinner honors the international press for its work covering the Chinese government’s crackdown on the pro-democracy demonstrations June 2-3, 1989, said Ann Lau of the Visual Artists Guild, which organized the dinner.

A special award will be given to Todd Carrel, a journalist who was severely beaten by soldiers at Tian An Men Square during the third anniversary of the demonstrations.

“We want people to know we haven’t forgotten,” Lau said. “At the same time, we want to let people know what’s happening right now.”

Harry Wu, executive director of The Laogai Research Foundation, will speak about alleged human rights violations by the Chinese government at prison labor camps.

A candlelight vigil will be from 8 to 10 p.m. June 3 in front of the Chinese Consulate, 501 Shatto Place, Westlake.

The dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 2 at the Golden Dragon restaurant, 960 N. Broadway. Tickets are $20.
