Cardinal Angelo Rossi; Held Senior Posts at the Vatican
Cardinal Angelo Rossi, 82, a Brazilian who held several senior posts at the Vatican. Rossi, who was ordained in 1937, had retired to his native Campinas, a town north of Sao Paulo, in 1993 after resigning as dean of the College of Cardinals. His previous posts included the position of prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelization of the Peoples, the chief administrative body of the Roman Catholic missions. The dean of the College of Cardinals carries out special administrative duties at the Vatican in the period between the death of a Pope and the election of a successor. In Campinas on May 21.
