With the start of the 1995 Atlantic hurricane season today, Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown dedicated the new National Hurricane Center at Florida International University on Wednesday.

Brown also named veteran meteorologist Robert Burpee as its new director, replacing the retiring Bob Sheets.

Forecasters have no way to predict exactly how severe a hurricane season might be. But during the average season, 10 tropical storms are given names when their winds hit 39 m.p.h., and six of them become hurricanes with winds exceeding 74 m.p.h.

“We don’t see any meteorological conditions that would tell us this season would be more or less active,” said National Hurricane Center forecaster Richard Pasch.
