Consumer Prices Rise 0.1% in May: The National Statistical Office said it was the lowest monthly gain this year. Consumer prices were up 0.6% in January, 0.5% in February, 1.4% in March, and 0.6% in April. South Korea’s central bank has been battling inflation largely by pushing interest rates to a three-year high and by restricting loans for stock investment. The 5.1% gain during the past 12 months compares to a 5.7% rise for the 12 months through May, 1994. Consumer prices also rose 0.1% in May of last year.
