UCI Forward Simmons Selected to Olympic Festival Team
UC Irvine forward Kevin Simmons, the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year last season, was selected to play on the West team at the U.S. Olympic Festival next month. Simmons, who led Irvine in scoring (14.9 points per game) and rebounding (7.7), was the only Big West basketball player named to play in the festival.
Long Beach State Coach Seth Greenberg, who led the 49ers to the Big West Conference Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament, will coach the West team.
Three Irvine water polo players and three volleyball players also were selected to play in the Olympic Festival.
Omar Amr, who led the Anteater water polo team with 25 goals and earned honorable-mention All-America honors, was named to the South team. Jean Michel (West team) and Craig Watson (North) also will participate.
Setter Jason Hinchman (North squad), Chris Harger (South) and Cory Weber (West) were named to compete in volleyball.
