Peter Kump; Founded Noted Cooking School

Peter Kump, 57, an influential figure on the American culinary scene and founder of the cooking school that bears his name. Kump founded Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School and the James Beard Foundation, named for the noted food writer. In 1974, Kump opened a cooking school in his apartment after attending Beard’s culinary school. The school expanded and eventually moved to larger quarters. More than 20,000 students have taken its classes. Kump bought Beard’s Greenwich Village brownstone after Beard died in 1985 and turned it into a culinary education center.
