In reply to federal prosecutors’ requests for a deadline extension, a federal grand jury will have until Aug. 11 to indict bombing suspect Terry L. Nichols, according to a court order handed down Friday.

U.S. District Judge David Russell’s order stated that the extension of the customary deadline for filing an indictment was appropriate because the “ends of justice” outweighed Nichol’s right to a speedy trial, according to the order.

Nichols, 40, has been charged in connection with the April 19 bombing of the Oklahoma City federal building. The Aug. 11 deadline for an indictment is the same provided for the second bombing suspect, Timothy J. McVeigh, 27. Attorneys for both men objected to the delay as unfair.
