Washington City Council OKs Curfew
The City Council, citing increased juvenile violence and gang activity, unanimously passed a curfew law Tuesday to prohibit anyone younger than 17 from being out from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays and midnight to 6 a.m. on weekends.
The curfew, supported by Mayor Marion Barry, will take effect June 30. In July and August, the curfew hours will be midnight to 6 a.m. seven days a week.
Violators will be held at truancy centers for release to a parent or guardian. Adults who are found permitting their children to break the curfew would face a fine of up to $500.
