L.L. Bean Toughens Return Policy: Stung by a rise in fraudulent and questionable merchandise returns, the 83-year-old Freeport, Me.-based retailer of sporting goods and clothing is quietly adding restrictions to its generous long-standing policy on merchandise returns. L.L. Bean said it will still guarantee “100% satisfaction” but that it hopes to end a situation in which the firm had occasionally been giving refunds on items it never sold.
