World IN BRIEF : TURKEY : Troops, Rebel Kurds Clash; at Least 30 Die
Fighting in the mountains between Turkey and Iran killed at least 30 Turkish soldiers and Turkish Kurd rebels, adding to growing border tension between the two countries. Turkey has warned Iran of its belief that the separatist Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, is again operating out of bases inside Iran. The Turks have suggested a joint operation with the Iranians against the insurgents. Failing that, they want permission for the Turkish army to mount an operation similar to its six-week anti-rebel raid that sent 35,000 troops into northern Iraq in March.
