World IN BRIEF : FRANCE : 7 EU Leaders Decry Nuclear Test Plans

Seven of the 15 European Union leaders signed a statement condemning French President Jacques Chirac’s decision to relaunch a nuclear testing program under an atoll in French Polynesia. The statement said they “condemn this decision and call upon the French government to change its mind.” Diplomats meeting in Cannes said Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok plans to raise the issue at a two-day EU summit that begins today. The Socialist prime ministers of Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Denmark and Austria all endorsed the statement.
